zen poem

the prayed-for rain
fell on those who
didn’t want it.
–zen poem

this poem chants itself inside my dreams while i sleep. like zen koans, zen poems stimulate an understanding in the pocket of emptiness between thinking and knowing. i’ve never prayed for rain, but my ancestors have. i’ve never not wanted rain, but my ancestors have. whether drought or flood, prayers are sent for the rain to come or for the rain to stop. the rain falls where the rain falls. whether drought or flood, i dance in the rain or i dance without the rain. i’m not more zen than my ancestors. in some ways, i’m less so. i’ve prayed for things i never received. i’ve prayed for things i already had. i’ve prayed without expecting my prayers to make a difference. i’ve prayed expecting my prayers to be answered. with rain or without rain, prayers are answered, but that doesn’t mean that requests are granted. praying is an expression of faith for some, but the faithless sometimes pray. the prayed-for rain falls on those who don’t want it. whatever we have, rain or no rain, our desires often run counter to what is as it is. we have hunger, we want to eat. we’ve grown fat, we want to lose weight. we can’t sleep, we want rest. we sleep too much because we are depressed. we want ice cream with our cake. we want provolone instead of cheddar cheese. we want bacon on our veggie burger, but we don’t want anyone to know. we want a vacation and someone else wants a job. we want a child and we want freedom from responsibilities. we want to plant a garden but we don’t want to mow the yard. the prayed-for rain falls on those who don’t want it. one day we will grow wise enough to want what we have, to accept what is, to love our lives right now.
